Attic Bedrooms

Attic Bedrooms

Attic – definition: a space or room just below the roof of a building. When we think of cozy spaces, an attic bedroom often comes to mind. They can be simple, like you often find at lakeside cabins, or as elegant as any other formal room. Many homes today have bonus space above garages that are being put to use as guest or extra bedroom space for the family. When I think of my favorite sleeping spaces, attic spaces are my favorite. When I was searching for photos, many of the ones that I found on pinterest that had the most pins were the coziest looking and often the smallest. What draws up to these? Warm colors, cocoon or den like tight quarters. Textiles can add additional warmth, as can lighting. So lets look at some examples, and maybe you will be reminded of a special place from your childhood.

I love the stone walls and the low ceilings we so often see in attic rooms. The use of bedding in the same neutral but warm colors is perfect here.

Occasionally there is enough space to tuck some bunk beds in an attic space. In this area at the top of the stairs, there would only have been enough space for one bed at ground level, so the bunk beds double the fun.

Roof windows add lots of light and many open for additional ventilation. Everything is whitewashed and the simple use of blue paint on the chest and in the bedcovers softens the sometimes starkness of all white. In the winter, I soft, warm rug would be a welcome addition.

I like the pop of bright fuchsia and yellow in this more modern space.

Smart use of geometric pattern in the blanket and area rug to mimic the geometry of the wood ceiling in a more eclectic attic space.

This is such a pretty space. The rug ties it all together, pulling in the colors of the brick wall, the green paint color, the brown of the wood beams and the red in the bedding. The bright white balances it all. The addition of a barrel vault ceiling and heavy trim molding makes this a beautiful space.

Wallpaper emphasizes the character of the antique beams, while the antique bed adds the additional warmth to the wood beams. It is all pulled together with subtle checks, floral and geometric patterns in the textiles.

Clever how the doors to the closet are covered in a geometric print. Lots of texture in the cable knit afghan is a perfect foil to the smoother pillow and window seat covers.

Smart to put storage under the beds, and use wall lights, because the side walls may not be tall enough to allow for a dresser with lamps on top.

Here they also used a storage bed, but added a built in dresser for the TV

A somewhat masculine attic space gains warmth with earth colored linen bed coverings. I am wishing that the rug on the floor is faux fur.

This little boys attic room is charming……from the sock monkey on the red and blue bedding to the bed that sits on wheels, and the book pages ceiling.

At the top of the stairs a wood high and steep ceiling topped with a unique chandelier awaits the lucky sleeper. A rood window adds additional light.

A larger attic space allows for a sitting area in addition to the sleeping area. The side walls are tall enough for dressers.

This space is much smaller, with underbid storage and a built in storage unit for books and decor. Tucked beneath the window, it is a cozy space for reading as well as sleeping.

This space has a swing that would make any adult or child happy to enjoy it. What fun!

A rustic space kept from becoming too dark with the addition of white floors and beds.

Bright and all white except for the large trunk that adds character and contrast.

Tucking these beds under the eaves with a storage partition, giving each person a sense of enclosure.

The light fixture is a nice accent in this all white, shabby chic attic bedroom.

I like rope beds…….and the one here sits in a bright space.

Just one small accent wall can add considerable character to any space, as it does here. I would venture to say that the view of the night sky must be considerable.

Feminine in feeling, yet restrained at the same time.

The colors are saturated and warm. On a cold winter night, this room, with wood beams, and with its plaster walls with rounded corners, exudes warmth and coziness.

Round windows like this were quite common in attic spaces, and add architectural interest. Tucked tightly under the eave, with two lamps that offer a warm evening welcome, this bed reminds me of the camp beds we would throw ourselves on, with open spring box springs that squeaked when we moved.

The fireplace in this attic space adds ambiance.

These beams are beautiful in this tailored space.

The four poster fits nicely in this space. The lightness of the shaker style has good visual weight without appearing too heavy. The area rug and bed covering have complimentary geometry that adds warmth and interest.

Bold and colorful, Bohemian… reason an attic space has to be boring. I adore the crystal chandelier.

Another fun use of color and pattern softens, yet compliments the texture of the stone walls. Lots going on but in a delightful way.

A terrific nautical feel.

A unique design statement adds character to this children’s attic room. Gray, red and cream with the black accent color of the beds is always a winning combination.

Another feminine attic space. The combination of green, violet and white works here. The two hanging lights are cute and perfect in scale.

a bit more designed than some of the above rooms, but a wonderful space.

A brilliant way to balance the use color in a white room……a bright red carpet and a row of books, many with red bindings, in a bookshelf at the top of the closet wall.

Another masculine approach, with the judicious use of black and gray, with a hint of nautical.

Directly opposite the bed in the above photo, a built in provides storage space and a place for the TV.

Even in an attic space there can be room for glamor. This Ralph Lauren  silver poster bed is the starting point for the glitz and sophistication  of this space, using purple, red and a bit of black to accent a mostly gray pallet.

I don’t know about you, but Downton Abbey, for me, was every bit as good as expected. I just adore Violet…..I wish I could drop such proper one liners as she so capably does, and with such ease and with a good roll of the eyes! Thank you for coming to visit my blog. Laters, charisse

  1. Love this! So cozy for this cloudy, frigid day. I lived in an attic apt. once for about 6 months. Some of the B&B’s we have
stayed in have such lovely “rooms in the sky.” Your comments are priceless, always bringing attention to the artistic. I see things I would have never caught with my untrained eye. I learn so much from you!!!

I agree that Downton Abbey was spectacular! I wore a hat and drank Earl Grey. 🙂 It was so much more interesting after reading your blog about Highclere!

    Stay Warm

    • I still want either a cozy attic space or a cupboard bed to curl up in and read a good book. As kid I had a tree I used to read in, but those days are long gone!

  2. Make me want to finish the attic!
